Outpatient Versus Residential Inpatient: Which Is Right For You?

Choosing a treatment center for addiction isn’t always easy. There are several factors to consider, such as whether or not your insurance will cover a particular treatment center, the length of treatment, therapies provided, and services available. Your number one priority, of course, is to find treatment as soon as possible, but it’s also important to be an informed consumer and to find a rehab that is a good fit for you.

One choice you will make is whether to seek treatment at an inpatient or outpatient rehab. Both provide comprehensive addiction treatment, but a live-in allows you to stay at the facility full-time for the duration of treatment, whereas outpatient is only during certain hours.

Sometimes, the choice is made for you. It may be that your insurance will only cover one type of treatment program or a specific facility. If you are free to choose, though, here are some considerations that can help you make the best choice for you.

Benefits Of A Residential Inpatient Program

One of the major benefits of this type of treatment is the level of support. You are immersed in recovery 24 hours a day. While this may seem overwhelming, it is often necessary to help you recover. If you do not live in a supportive environment or if you have struggled to stay sober on your own or with an outpatient program, this is a good next step. It offers a secure environment free from outside distractions or influences. When cravings or problems arise, you have staff available round the clock to help you get through them. This kind of treatment may last anywhere from 30 days to six months, with 60 and 90 day programs the most common.

Life skills are a major focus in treatment. For people who have struggled with basic living and social skills, this focus helps promote confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, responsibility and accountability. Most inpatient programs also offer some sort of aftercare program to help people transition more smoothly into life after treatment.

There aren’t really any drawbacks to residential programs, aside from the difficulties that may be faced by persons who are employed or caregivers of children. In this case, you must weigh the benefits with the drawbacks. Some employers may allow for medical leave to attend treatment, and family members may be able to care for children. When addiction is controlling your life, your job and your family are at risk. Sometimes the best, smartest option is to take the leap and get the help you need to recover.

Benefits Of An Outpatient Program

While inpatient treatment is a great way to overcome addiction and get the help you need, outpatient treatment is also effective. Thousands of people with substance abuse issues are able to overcome their problems and get healthy thanks to part-time treatment. These programs offer many of the same treatments and therapies found in a live-in setting. There are topical groups, group counseling, individual counseling, individualized treatment plans and plenty of support. Instead of staying at the facility, however, you’ll go home at the end of your session. These programs may be daily or weekly, and may last anywhere from two to eight hours, depending on the nature of the program. Most last anywhere from 12 to 24 weeks. For people who have young children to care for, or who cannot take time off work, this type of treatment program offers a more flexible alternative.

Non-residential treatment is especially effective for those who are motivated to recover. Because you are only in treatment a short time each day, it may be more difficult to stay motivated and steer clear of sticky situations. You need to be committed to changing your life. It’s also helpful if you have support from family, your spouse or partner, and friends. It’s not easy recovering from addiction, so it’s important that the people you interact with daily are behind your decision to get sober.

It’s important to find a program that will work for you. If you are a woman struggling with substance abuse, get help. Recovery is possible, no matter what type of treatment you choose.

The aftercare and parenting groups that Wayside had is something that helped me so very much as a new parent who was fairly new in recovery. I now have a Bachelor’s degree in social work and am working on a Master’s degree in counseling specializing in addictions counseling. If I had not been placed in Wayside House so many years ago I would have never been able to achieve the things that I have in my life. I am forever grateful for the blessing it has had in my life!”
