Alice & Pete Dye Invitational

Alice & Pete Dye Invitational Held at St. Andrews Club in Delray Beach
to Benefit Wayside House, Inc.

More than 100 ardent golf and bridge players took part in the Alice & Pete Dye Invitational on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at the St. Andrews Club in Delray Beach to benefit the women of Wayside House. With event sponsorship from Joseph Jingoli & Son, Inc., and a strong showing of supporters whose sponsorships ranged from the $500 to $10,000 levels, this fundraiser was a great kick off to the social season in Palm Beach County. Lending their names to the event and serving as honorary chairs, were Alice and Pete Dye. Internationally acclaimed golf course designers and ranked amateur golfers, the Dyes are longtime friends of Wayside House. For more than 35 years, Wayside House has been helping women, children and families recover from the devastating effects of addiction.

Chaired by Wayside House board members Karen Sywolski and George McElroy, Jr., the Alice and Pete Dye Invitational gave participants the opportunity to play St. Andrews’ unique 18-hole, par-3 course, which was designed by Alice and Pete Dye. As competitors took to the links, bridge players enjoyed the pleasant ambience of St. Andrews’ newly re-designed clubhouse. Following the concurrent tournaments, golfers and bridge players joined together for a harvest-themed buffet luncheon in the clubhouse.

“This event was made possible by an overwhelming response from members of the community, and for that we are most grateful,” said event co-chair and sponsor Karen Sywolski. “We also wish to recognize the very accommodating staff at St. Andrews, particularly Golf Professional Jim Simon, and Assistant Club Manager Shelagh Green for helping to make the day the great success that it was.”

The winning team included: Clark and Andy MacKenzie, and Margot and Al Heininger. Low gross winners were Barbara Whittaker, Betsy Fogarty, Gordon Kraft and Lisa Tiernan. Second low net was awarded to Karen and Bob Sywolski, Judy Wheatley and Ben Moon and third low net winners were Eustis Walcott, Peggy Dugdale, Karl Scott and Jean Christie. Each winner received a crystal biscuit jar. The Bridge Tournament consisted of the North/South team and the East/West team. North/South winners were Cynthia Brown and Ellen Stark, East/West winners were Peg Mulry and Mary Lynch.

“The day was picture perfect from beginning to end,” said Wayside House’s board president Perry O’Neal. “It was a wonderful and fun tournament that appealed to both golfers and card players alike. What is most pleasing to me is that we were able to raise funds that will be used to help those in need of Wayside House’s services and programs.”

An annual Wayside House benefit, the golf tournament in years past has been held in the spring. A decision to host the event in the fall brought new participants into the competition. This year was the first time the tournament was played at the St. Andrews Club, and the debut of the bridge championship.

“The journey to sobriety is never easy,” said Jill Reece, executive director of Wayside House. “At Wayside House, our therapeutic team helps clients embrace life without addiction. We are truly grateful to those who have committed themselves to our mission throughout the years, and to those new friends who join us in our cause.”
